What is the best tasting beer available?

posted on December 2, 2008 in Beer

Also if you can, please tell me what happens to a beer when it's past it's expiration date? I have tried rob hook (copper hook spring brew), and 2 different michelob brews. These were past there due date so it could explain the bad taste, but what is the best tasting beer though? There are so many varieties to try, but I don't want to waste my time with bad stuff. What does a good beer taste like?

What are the classifications of beer and how do they taste?

posted on in Beer

You would think that after 12 years of intense beer drinking that I would "know" the type of beer that I am drinking! To the contrary, I am fairly limited to the likes of bud "light" or "heavy." I have started to enjoy the IPAs and Lagers of the world, but I still don't know the classification of the beer caste system. I read a book on wine, and they laid out simplistic terminology the difference between a "heavy" wine like beourdouex compare to a "light" wine like pinot noir. The best answer would be similar to that wine comparision…

Thanks!

Two classes of beer collectively make up thousands of different varieties of beer.

The two different categories of beer differ in the type of yeast used to brew them and the temperature at which they are brewed. Beer that is classified as lager uses special yeast that ferments best at cooler temperatures. Beer classified as ale uses another type of yeast that ferments best at warmer temperatures. Both lagers and ales contain hops, malted barley, yeast and water.

There are basically four types of beer that fall under the lager category: American style pale lager, pilsner, light lager and dark lager. Pale lager usually contains more carbonation than the other types of beer. It tends to be light in colour as well as in body. The most popular brands of beer in the United States, such as Coors and Budweiser, are examples of a pale lager.

Pilsner is another type of lager that is pale in colour. However, pilsners tend to have more distinct flavours and are often more bitter than American style pale lager. In the U.S., light lager beer contains less hops and barleys, which reduces the caloric content of the beer. Light beer also has a slightly lower alcohol concentration than regular beers. In Europe, a light lager is a beer that is light in colour rather than calories. Dark lagers are made with roasted barley and hops, and therefore have richer flavour, a very dark colour and a full-bodied taste.

The main types of beer that are referred to as ales include brown ale, porter and stout. Brown ale is usually red or copper coloured rather than brown. It has a milder flavour than the other types of ale beer.

Porters are darker and more full bodied. Porters usually have a more noticeable barley flavour that is reminiscent of chocolate, along with a mild hop flavour. Stouts are the darkest type of beer, almost black in colour. They are thick and taste strongly of the barley and hops that they are made from.

Although there are generally only two types of beer, several thousand unique types of beer are created through different combinations of ingredients and added flavours. Fruit, vegetables, spices and so on are added to both lagers and ales to create beer with flavours like cherry wheat and pumpkin spice, for example.

Does the beer marinate the chicken or in the sauce while simmering?

posted on in Beer

I want to make oven BBQ Chicken with Beer in the sauce, but I don't know if I am to marinate the quarters in the beer and spices first, or do I just pour it in the sauce when it's simmering???

Can you give me your recipe on how to do this please?

My advise to you will be to marinate your chicken with beer and spices like a day before you're planning on cooking it. So that way it can absorb the flavors. Then once you're ready to cook your meat you can marinate the chicken with BBQ sauce a little before you are ready to cook it so it can soak on the BBQ flavors also.
P.S. Do not over marinate with beer or it might come up with a more sour taste though. But once again that depends on what kind of flavor you're trying to reach. Good luck and save me a plate;)

How much beer does someone need to drink on a daily basis to be considered an alcoholic?

posted on in Beer

I'm concerned for someone close to me. I've talked to them and they just get angry and retaliate and deny but they drink on a daily basis. Mainly beer now but it used to be harder alcohol. So how many beers a day considers you an alcoholic?

to drink daily… is unhealthy at best. but is your friend able..to go without beer..when it is around. ? . if she says i am not going to drink..can she follow through.or if she says she is only going to have two..and ends up having ten. does she drink until she passes our or runs out? does she lack control. it is about a lot of things. tolerance._ does it take more or less for her to get drunk?.. how it interfers with daily life. has this person had arguments.. lost job.. missed work… or school. has this persons health been affected. personality change. getting angry when questioned about drinking is not good sign either. there are alcoholics.. who only drink on weekends. .or when they have money. sometimes one beer is too many. your friend may need some intervention . if this friend is young.. she may be abusing alcohol right now. but it would only be a matter of time. however you mentioned the hard liquor..so i would try to get professional help. are her family members concerned as well.?

What is the best beer to use when preparing beer battered brats?

posted on in Beer

I'm just looking for opinions on what beers people prefer their beer battered brats be prepared in. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

depends upon your likes and dislikes…
I would go with an amber beer or darker to add the extra flavor from the beer.

However, a lighter beer like a lager or pilsner would give you a little beer flavor, but a cleaner flavor of the brats.

What is the best beer magazine to subscribe to?

posted on November 27, 2008 in Beer

I want to get one of my groomsman who thinks of himself as a beer Connoisseur a subscription to a beer magazine. Just wondering which is the best one in terms of content including beer reviews, and also info on home-brewing. I was leaning towards Beer Advocate.

I got my Husband Beer Advocate
www.beeradvocate.com
It’s only $19.99

I also got him www.byo.com
That one was $45 for 16 issue

He says for the “Home Brewing” go with Brew (BYO). If you want interesting articles and facts go with Beer Advocate
